Diagnosis
| Reference | Diagnosis | |
|---|---|---|
| L. D. Martin et al. 2012 | Foot-propelled diving birds with an enlarged, bulbous external condyle on the femur; triangular cnemial crest on the tibiotarsus, a broadly expanded fibular crest extending halfway down the tibial shaft; heavily built, short, and broad tarsometatarsi; transverse section of shaft almost triangular; metatarsal facet for digit I very high (almost in the middle of the tarsometatarsus); trochleae for digits III and IV similar in size and length (trochlea for digit III, slightly longer), and broadly separated; trochlea for digit II remarkably proximal and higher than the level of the distal foramen; this trochlea is closely pressed to the shaft, but also projects medially and plantarly; intercotylar prominence low and wide; tubercle for muscle tibialis anticus in the middle of the anterior fossa; antero-exterior edge of the shaft placed on the linea between the trochleae for digits III and IV. The shortness compared to breadth of the tarsometatarsus and the high position of the facet for the first metatarsal separates the Brodavidae from all other known hesperornithiforms. |
