Tachyglossus bruijnii was named by Peters and Doria (1876). It is extant. Its type specimen is GE 1623, a skull. It is the type species of Zaglossus.
It was recombined as Proechidna bruijni by Lydekker (1894); it was recombined as Zaglossus bruijnii by Allen (1912), Griffiths et al. (1991); it was recombined as Zaglossus bruijni by Augee et al. (2006).
