Taxonomy
Mus paca was named by Linnaeus (1766) [see ICZN Opinion 1894]. It is extant. It is the type species of Agouti.

It was recombined as Agouti paca by Lacépède (1799), Hay (1902); it was recombined as Coelogenys paca by Giebel (1883); it was recombined as Cuniculus paca by International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (1998), Ríos-Uzeda et al. (2004).
