Homagnostus comptus was named by Palmer (1962). Its type specimen is USNM 143126, a cephalon/head, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Steptoean Stage, Duck Creek, Nevada - Palmer 1999, which is in the Steptoean/Dolgellian of shale/limestone the Dunderberg Formation Nevada.
It was recombined as Agnostus comptus by Rozova (1964).
