Hiatobairdia was named by Kristan-Tollmann (1970) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr m Sepkoski's reference number: ZR85]. Its type is Hiatobairdia subsymmetrica.

It was assigned to Podocopida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Bairdiinae by Sohn (1987), Forel (2022).
