Phaseliforma was named by Pessagno (1972) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno K Camp-u]. It is the type genus of Phaseliformidae.

It was assigned to Phaseliformidae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
