Phoxiscorpio was named by Kjellesvig-Waering (1986). Its type is Phoxiscorpio peachi. It is the type genus of Phoxiscorpionidae.
It was assigned to Phoxiscorpionidae by Kjellesvig-Waering (1986); and to Centromachidae by Jeram (1994) and Dunlop et al. (2013).
