Taxonomy
Mesodon tenuidens was named by Woodward (1890). Its type specimen is BMNH 47983, a set of teeth, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Stonesfield Slate, near Oxford (BMNH fish), which is in a Bathonian marine slate in the United Kingdom.
