Taxonomy
Plesiosuchus was named by Owen (1884). It is the type genus of Plesiosuchina.

It was synonymized subjectively with Dakosaurus by Delair (1958), Young et al. (2010).

It was assigned to Geosaurini by Young et al. (2012), Young et al. (2013), Young (2013); to Geosaurinae by Parrilla-Bel and Canudo (2015); and to Plesiosuchina by Young et al. (2024).
