Poseidonamicus was named by Benson (1972) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l R]. It is extant. It was considered monophyletic by Hunt (2007).

It was assigned to Podocopida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Thaerocytherinae by Hunt (2007).
