Schismotherium fractum was named by Ameghino (1887) [The type is lost. Neotype: MACN-A 6445–6470]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Río Bote - Estancia Maria Elisa, which is in a Santacrucian terrestrial horizon in the Santa Cruz Formation of Argentina.
