Denaea was named by Pruvost (1922) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-l C Mosc-u Sepkoski's reference number: 2,451 in Fournier and Pruvost 1922].

It was assigned to Symmoriidae by Zangerl (1981), Williams (1985); to Symmoriida by Sepkoski (2002); to Denaeidae by Ivanov (2005); to Symmoriiformes by Maisey (2008); and to Falcatidae by Ginter et al. (2010), Cuny and Stemmerik (2018), Ginter (2018).
