Taxonomy
Carnilestes major was named by Wang and Zhai (1995). Its type specimen is IVPP V 10492, a partial skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Fengmenao, which is in a Paleocene terrestrial horizon in the Shanghu Formation of China.
