Chomatodus arcuatus was named by St. John (1870). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Nebraska City section, Upper Coal Measures, which is in a Kasimovian marine horizon in Nebraska.
It was recombined as Petalodus arcuatus by Eastman (1903).
