Scalabrinitherium was named by Ameghino (1883).

It was corrected as Scalabrinia by Lydekker (1894).

It was assigned to Macraucheniidae by Ameghino (1885), Lydekker (1894); to Macrauchenidae by Scott (1913); and to Macraucheniinae by Cione et al. (2000), Schmidt and Ferrero (2014).
