Palaeohoplophorus was named by Ameghino (1883).

It was corrected as Palaehoplophorus by Ameghino (1889), Rovereto (1914), Hoffstetter (1958) and Fernicola (2008).

It was assigned to Glyptodontia by Ameghino (1885); to Hoplophoridae by Ameghino (1889); to Sclerocalyptidae by Brown (1912) and Rovereto (1914); to Glyptodontidae by Carroll (1988); and to Palaehoplophorini by Hoffstetter (1958), McKenna and Bell (1997) and Fernicola (2008).
