Escribania was named by Bonaparte et al. (1993). Its type is Escribania chubutensis.

It was assigned to Kollpaniinae by de Muizon and Cifelli (2000), Zack et al. (2005); and to Didolodontidae by Gelfo (2007), Gelfo et al. (2007).
