Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
M. Murakami et al. 2012Assigned to Phocoenidae based on presence of fossae for inferior vestibules, premaxillary eminences, and a frontal boss. Differs from all other phocoenids by presence of gently inclined vertex and dorsoventrally stout stylohyoid that does not bend ventrally. Differing from all phocoenids except Archaeophocaena by having right ascending process of premax- illa attached to right nasal, very wide premaxillae at position of premaxillary sac fossae, wide ascending processes of pre- maxillae, and narrow fossae for inferior vestibules. Differs from all phocoenids except Archaeophocaena and Haborophocoena spp. by having anteriorly diverging mesorostral groove at level of antorbital notch and ascending process of right premaxil- lae being much wider than its counterpart on the left. Differs from all phocoenids except Archaeophocaena, Haborophocoena spp., and Septemtriocetus bosselaersi by having low premaxil- lary eminences. Differs from all phocoenids except Archaeopho- caena, Haborophocoena spp., and Piscolithax tedfordi by having strongly left-skewed skull. Differs from all extinct phocoenids by having anteroposteriorly extended, narrow, additional postero- lateral sulci (medial to lateral edge of premaxillae). Differs from all extinct phocoenids except Archaeophocaena and Haboropho- coena toyoshimai in having anteromedial and posteromedial sulci unconnected to premaxillary foramina. Differs from Lomacetus, Phocoena spp., and Phocoenoides by having a well-developed an- torbital notch. Differs from Neophocoena, Phocoena phocoena, and Phocoenoides by having a massive, globular, anterior process of periotic.
