Diagnosis
| Reference | Diagnosis | |
|---|---|---|
| P. Goldin and D. Startsev 2017 | A cetotheriid whale 3.5 m long differ- ing from other cetotheriids in following apomorphies: a distinct autapomorphic shape of posterior process of the tympanoperiotic exposed on the lateral skull wall as a medium-sized rhomboid surface and curved S-shaped nuchal crests (shares this character with Brandtocetus, Nannocetus, Piscobalaena) which overhang the temporal fossa (a unique feature within Cetotheriidae); also, it has a wide occiput with a foramen magnum wider than high. Differs from all other cetotheriids except Herpetocetus transatlanticus in a long double-bladed transversely com- pressed anterior process of the periotic. Differs from all cetotheriines in low basioccipital crests in adult speci- mens. Differs from Mithridatocetus spp. in a low skull; a squared postglenoid process, directed ventrolaterally in posterior view; and a small paroccipital process. Differs from Mithridatocetus spp. and Brandtocetus chongulek in squamosal and parietal bones not transversely bulging into the temporal fossa. |
