Chelonipus was named by von Lilienstern (1939). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Chelonipus torquatus.

It was assigned to Testudines by Kuhn (1971), Haubold (1971), Demathieu and Haubold (1972), Haubold (1974); and to Chelonia by Lovelace and Lovelace (2012).
