Perisphinctes muhlbachi was named by Hyatt (1894). Its type specimen is USNM 30203 and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Dichotomoceras muhlbachi by Crickmay (1933); it was recombined as Perisphinctes (Dichotomosphinctes) muhlbachi by Imlay (1961).
