Cypraea ballista was named by Dall (1915). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Prolyncina ballista by Schilder (1927); it was recombined as Cypraeorbis willcoxii ballista by Schilder and Schilder (1971); it was recombined as Cypraeorbis ballista by Dolin (1991); it was recombined as Cypraeorbis willcoxi ballista by Landau and Groves (2011).
