Cypraea leporina was named by Lamarck (1810). It is extant. It is the type species of Cypraea (Basterotia), Cavicypraea, Cypraea (Cavicypraea).
It was recombined as Cypraea (Basterotia) leporina by Sacco (1894); it was recombined as Cypraea (Cavicypraea) leporina by Cossmann (1896); it was recombined as Trona leporina by Dolin (1991).
