Taxonomy
Arcestes perplanus was named by Meek (1877). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Buena Vista Canon, West Humboldt Range, which is in a Bithynian/Illyrian carbonate limestone in Nevada.
It was recombined as Gymnites perplanus by Smith (1914), Silberling and Nichols (1982) and Tozer (1994).
