Taxonomy
Triton apenninicum was named by Sassi (1827). It is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Charonia (Sassia).

It was recombined as Charonia (Sassia) apenninica by Cavallo and Repetto (1992); it was recombined as Sassia apenninica by Bellardi (1873), Harasewych and Beu (2007) and Beu (2010).
