Kestrosaurus dreyeri

Taxonomy

Kestrosaurus dreyeri was named by Haughton (1925). Its type specimen is SAM-PK-3452, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Farm Harmonia, Senekal, which is in a Spathian terrestrial sandstone in the Burgersdorp Formation of South Africa. It is the type species of Kestrosaurus.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Damiani (2001) and Damiani and Rubidge (2003).

Synonyms

Capitosaurus haughtoni was named by Broili and Schröder (1937). Its type specimen is BSP 1934 VIII 50, a partial skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Kaaimansgat 146, which is in an Olenekian terrestrial horizon in the Burgersdorp Formation of South Africa.

It was recombined as Parotosuchus haughtoni by Damiani (2001), Damiani (2001) and Damiani and Rubidge (2003); it was synonymized subjectively with Kestrosaurus dreyeri by Shishkin et al. (2004).
