Mesolophodus problematicus was named by Woodward (1889). Its type specimen is BMNH P.2641, a tooth, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Armagh, Ireland (BMNH), which is in a Mississippian marine limestone in the United Kingdom.
