Taxonomy
Pleurogomphus auriculatus was named by Davis (1883). Its type specimen is BMNH P.2601, a tooth, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Armagh, Ireland (BMNH), which is in a Mississippian marine limestone in the United Kingdom.
It was recombined as Copodus auriculatus by Woodward (1889).
