Spatiopora was named by Ulrich (1882). Its type is Spatiopora aspera.

It was assigned to Ceramoporidae by Bassler (1911), Bassler (1953); to Ceramoporinae by Utgaard (1968); and to Trepostomida by Sepkoski (2002).
