Lydekkerina huxleyi

Taxonomy

Bothriceps huxleyi was named by Lydekker (1889). Its type specimen is BMNH R.507, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Edenburg, which is in an Induan terrestrial horizon in the Katberg Formation of South Africa.

It was recombined as Lydekkerina huxleyi by Broom (1915), Haughton (1925), Parrington (1948), Shishkin et al. (1996), Schoch and Milner (2000), Damiani and Rubidge (2003), Jeannot et al. (2006), Schoch (2013) and Poropat et al. (2023).

Synonyms

Limnoiketes paludinatans was named by Parrington (1948). Its type specimen is UMZC T.214, a skull (Complete skull with mandibles and shoulder girdle), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Harrismith Commonage, which is in an Induan/Olenekian terrestrial horizon in the Normandien Formation of South Africa.

It was synonymized subjectively with Lydekkerina huxleyi by Shishkin et al. (1996), Damiani and Rubidge (2003) and Jeannot et al. (2006).
Putterillia platyceps was named by Broom (1930). Its type specimen is TM 168, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Harrismith Commonage, which is in an Induan/Olenekian terrestrial horizon in the Normandien Formation of South Africa.

It was synonymized subjectively with Lydekkerina huxleyi by Shishkin et al. (1996), Schoch and Milner (2000), Damiani and Rubidge (2003) and Jeannot et al. (2006).
Lydekkerina dutoiti was named by Broom (1930). Its type specimen is MGM 4285, a partial skeleton (Skull associated with lower jaw and anterior part of vertebral column), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Harrismith Commonage, which is in an Induan/Olenekian terrestrial horizon in the Normandien Formation of South Africa. It is the type species of Broomulus.

It was recombined as Broomulus dutoiti by Shishkin et al. (1996), Schoch and Milner (2000) and Damiani and Rubidge (2003); it was synonymized subjectively with Lydekkerina huxleyi by Jeannot et al. (2006).

A. M. Jeannot et al. 2006	Distinguished from all other lydekkerinids by the following autapomorphies: anterior palatal vacuity with anterodorsal projections; ventral surface of skull roof with series of elongate ridges (condition unknown in other lydekkerinids); vomerine shagreen present (a possible autapomorphic reversal).
