Petropterix sibirix was named by Vršanský (2003). Its type specimen is PIN 3064/8598, an exoskeleton (pronotum, forewings and four legs), and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Baissa (PIN collection 3064, bed 31), which is in an Aptian lacustrine - large marl/siltstone in the Zaza Formation of the Russian Federation.
