Aetea was named by Lamouroux (1812) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 1260]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Aeteidae, Aeteoidea.
It was assigned to Cheilostomata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Aeteidae by Bassler (1953), Gordon (2012), Viera et al. (2016).
