Bifaxaria was named by Busk (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l R  Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Bifaxariidae, Bifaxarioidea. 
It was assigned to Cheilostomata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Bifaxariidae by Bassler (1953), Cheetham (1972), Gordon (2012).
