Spirillina was named by Reuss (1862) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Rhae R Sepkoski's reference number: 537]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Spirillininae by Cushman (1927); to Spirillinidae by Harlton (1933), Fischer (1969) and Loeblich and Tappan (1984); to Foraminiferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Planispirillinidae by Margerel (2012).
