Cryptosula was named by Canu and Bassler (1925) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-u-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Cheiloporinidae by Bassler (1953); to Hippoporinidae by Brown (1952), Brown (1956); to Cheilostomata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cryptosulidae by Pouyet (2000), Bock (2006).
