Electra was named by Lamouroux (1816) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than R Sepkoski's reference number: 1260]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Electridae.

It was assigned to Electrinidae by Canu and Bassler (1920); to Membraniporidae by Brown (1952); to Cheilostomata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Electridae by Bassler (1953), Pouyet (2000), Bock (2006), Gordon (2012).
