Taxonomy
Protozoea was named by Dames (1886) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno Sepkoski's reference number: 531,619]. It is not extant. Its type is Protozoea hilgendorfi. It is the type genus of Protozoeidae.

It was corrected as Protozoe by Sepkoski (2002).

It was assigned to Conchyliocarida by Schram et al. (1999); to Concavicarida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Protozoeidae by Schram (2014).
