Jatropha tertiaria was named by Berry (1929). It is not extant. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type locality is Belen, Punta PariƱas, which is in a Miocene/Oligocene terrestrial horizon in Peru.

E. W. Berry 1929Fruit capsular, septicidal: this is shown by both specimens of the seeds that were found having preserved a considerable part of the capsular wall which enclosed them. The configuration of the part of the capsule wall preserved, particularly as shown in Fig. 41, where it narrows upward around the caruncle, would seem to demand a three- celled capsule, which is, of course, normal for the existing members of the genus. The capsule must have been ligneous in life since the minimum thickness of the wall in the part preserved is about 1 millimeter, and it thickens to 2.5 to 3 millimeters along the middle region of the seed and at the edges of the valve
