Taxonomy
Hippothoa was named by Lamouroux (1821) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi R Sepkoski's reference number: 1260]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Hippothoidae.

It was assigned to Cheilostomata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Hippothoidae by Brown (1952), Bassler (1953), Schmidt (2003), Bock (2006).
