Rhizodopsis was named by Young (1866). Its type is Holoptychius granulatus. It is the type genus of Rhizodopsidae.
It was assigned to Rhizodontidae by Woodward (1891); to Megalichthyidae by Hay (1902); and to Rhizodopsidae by Berg (1940).
