Palmicellaria was named by Alder (1864) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 1260]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Lepraliidae by Ulrich and Bassler (1904); to Mucronellidae by Bassler (1953); to Smittinidae by Canu and Bassler (1935), Brown (1952), Brown (1958); to Cheilostomata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Celleporidae by Schmidt (2003), Bock (2006).
