Pasythea was named by Lamouroux (1812) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 602]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Pasytheidae.

It was assigned to Cheilostomata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pasytheidae by Bassler (1953), Bock (2006).
