Plagiosmittia was named by Canu and Bassler (1917) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-u T Eo-u Sepkoski's reference number: 1260]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Mucronellidae by Bassler (1953); to Hippoporinidae by Brown (1958); to Cheilostomata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Smittinidae by Cheetham (1962), Bock (2006).
