Taxonomy
Amblypterus punctatus was named by Agassiz (1835). Its type specimen is NMS 1878.18.4, a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Gonatodus punctatus by Woodward (1891), Gardiner (1967).
