Microsteiromys jacobsi was named by Walton (1990) [Holotype: FMNH PM 54677, right mandible with dp4-m3, from Monkey beds (IGM-DU locality 022 or UCMP locality V4536)
Etymology: In honor to Dr. Luis L. Jacobs, paleontologist and educator.]. Its type specimen is FMNH PM 54677, a mandible (right mandible with dp4-m3), and it is a 3D body fossil.
