Stromateidae was named by Rafinesque (1810). It is extant. Its type is Stromateus.

It was assigned to Stromateiformes by Jordan (1963); to Perciformes by Danil'chenko (1980); to Pelagia by Miya et al. (2013); and to Scombriformes by Betancur et al. (2013), Nelson et al. (2016), van der Laan (2019).
