Taxonomy

Exocoetidae was named by Risso (1827). It is extant.

It was assigned to Synentognathi by Jordan (1963); to Exocoetoidei by Betancur et al. (2013); to Beloniformes by Carnevale et al. (2014), Bannikov (2014), Nelson et al. (2016); and to Belonoidei by van der Laan (2019).

Synonyms

Clupea evolans was named by Blainville (1818).

It was recombined as Engraulis evolans by Agassiz (1835), Agassiz (1843), Agassiz (1843); it was considered a nomen dubium by Carnevale et al. (2014).
Rhamphexocoetinae was named by Bannikov et al. (1985).

It was considered an invalid subgroup of Exocoetidae by van der Laan (2019).
