Cyclopteridae was named by Bonaparte (1831). It is extant. Its type is Cyclopterus.

It was assigned to Cyclopteroidea by Hay (1902); to Cyclopteriformes by Jordan (1963); to Cottales by Betancur et al. (2013); and to Scorpaeniformes by Nelson et al. (2016).
