Xenastrapotherium chaparralensis was named by Johnson and Madden (1997). Its type specimen is UCMP 37838, a tooth (Lower m3), and it is a 3D body fossil.

S. E. Johnson and R. H. Madden 1997Xenastrapotherium chaparralensis differs from X. kraglievich in displaying an upper molar buccal cingulum and a more lingually directed M1-2 crista. Xenastrapotherium chaparralensis differs from X. kraglievichi, X. christi and X. aequatorialis in having greatter lower molar area.
