Jaxtasuchus was named by Schoch and Sues (2014). Its type is Jaxtasuchus salomoni. It was considered monophyletic by Schoch and Sues (2014).

It was assigned to Doswelliidae by Schoch and Sues (2014), Ezcurra (2016).
